About Lake Mburo National Park

Conservation importance:

Its’ diverse habitants of open savannas, dry savannas, lakes, swamps, forests, thickets, rocky outcrops and dry hillsides are a home to diversity of plants and animals. With a record of 68 mammals – impala, slender mongoose and bush rat in Uganda are found in this area. Once a home to hunting dogs, black rhinos, Giant forest hogs and Elephants that have extinct in this area since 1940’s.

Size:

At 260km2, the park is the 2nd smallest park in Uganda after Mgahinga.

Tourist attractions:

Common mammals – Zebra, Topi, Impala, buffalo, waterbuck and bushbuck. Giraffes have since been reintroduced to this park. The 6 lakes, largest being Mburo, are all interconnected by swamps. These wetlands are a home to Sitatunga, hippos, Nile crocodiles and fish. Much of the park is accessible on land by game drive tracks, nature-walks around swamps and animal salt licks or by boat on water. With 332 species recorded, birding is also rewarding.

Other activities:

Visitors need not limit themselves to game drives; the park can also be explored using mountain bikes, by boat, on foot, and on horseback.
